Near infrared (NIR) radiation has a wavelength longer than the human eyes can detect, and it is located nearest to the section of the spectrum where the human eye can detect. The NIR region starts around the 700 µm – 800 µm. The human eye is a lot less sensitive to light wavelengths above 700 µm but very intense NIR light can be detected up to 780µm and will manifest as red light.
Why it matters: Leaves are especially bright in near-IR light. Thus, allowing us to see signs of disease or distress early on in our plants.
